Aromatherapy for sports
There are many fantastic essential oils that are truly helpful for supporting the performance in sports or recovering from sports. You can use them in body oil or lotion blends, shower gels or make your own balms.
Some oils are great for recovery and some stimulating ones are great for performance. Some oils have antispasmodic and natural pain killing properties so are great to use in recovery of injuries. Here are a few of my favourites:
This uplifting and fresh herbal essential oil is great for increasing energy. The oil is extracted from the leaves and sells very similar to the herb we use in cooking. It's often used in hair care products due to its stimulating properties and works wonders as a memory stimulant so can also be used when studying or when we need to focus on something. It has a fresh herbal scent and helps with digestion and breathing. It's great for sports performance being highly energising and stimulating and it can also be used combating jet lag. You can add the oil to your body products, shampoo and shower/ bath products. It has antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties among many others. Rosemary is advised to avoid during pregnancy and when suffering from high blood pressure.
Birch oil is a natural painkiller aspirin and the main components are salicylic acid and menthyl salicylate. It is a fantastic oil for recovery from sports. It's great detoxing oil, speeding the recovery time after performance. It's antispasmodic and great oil for rheumatism and arthritis as well as one of the best in treating cellulite. It's great for the skin and hair and in Scandinavia commonly used in body and hair products. It is made from the bark of a birch tree and has a herbal camphor type of scent. It is quite potent and you only need a few drops in your blend.
Fennel oil is similar to rosemary. It's herbal and made from fennel seeds. It's fresh energising and uplifting. It has antispasmodic, diuretic and stimulating properties and it helps to remove excess fluid, so is a great oil when tackling cellulite. It is a great oil to use during or after the exercise helping the muscles and nerves and is also stimulating to the mind helping concentration. It's a great oil to aid digestion ( just like the herb is when drinking) and circulation. This oil is best avoid during pregnancy.
Other great oils for sports are warming spice oils like cinnamon, clove and ginger etc. Lavender is also great for recovery as it’s cooling and calming.
